FAQs
We know pet care comes with a lot of questions—and we’re here to help. Below are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions we receive from pet parents in Bexley, Eastmoor, Berwick, and across East Columbus.
FAQs
Does my dog need a license in Franklin County?
Yes. Ohio law requires all dogs over three months of age to be licensed each year. Licensing helps reunite lost pets with their owners and supports local animal services. You can register or renew your dog’s license online through the Franklin County Dog Licensing portal.
Licenses are available in one-year, three-year, or permanent options, with discounted rates for spayed or neutered dogs. A current rabies vaccination is required to obtain a license, which we can provide.
How often should I bring my pet in?
All pets should have a wellness exam at least once a year. Puppies, kittens, seniors, and pets with chronic conditions may need more frequent visits. Regular checkups help us catch issues early and keep your pet feeling their best.
When should I spay or neuter my pet?
We generally recommend spaying or neutering around six months of age, but this may vary depending on breed and health factors. Spaying and neutering can prevent certain health issues and reduce unwanted behaviors. Our veterinary team can advise on the best timing for your pet.
Where do I take my pet in an emergency?
If your pet has an emergency outside of our regular hours, we recommend these local emergency clinics:
- OSU Veterinary Medical Center – Emergency care only
- OSU at Dublin – Emergency and urgent care
- MedVet Hilliard – 4050 Britton Parkway, Hilliard, OH 43026

What are your thoughts on pet insurance?
Pet insurance can be a great way to manage unexpected veterinary costs. Plans vary in what they cover, so we recommend researching a few providers and choosing one that aligns with your budget and expectations. We’re happy to answer questions about pet insurance during your visit.
What vaccines does my cat or dog need?
Vaccination needs vary based on your pet’s age, lifestyle, and health. Core vaccines for dogs typically include rabies, distemper, parvovirus, and adenovirus. For cats, core vaccines often include rabies, panleukopenia, herpesvirus, and calicivirus. Our team will create a personalized vaccination plan that provides protection without over-vaccination.
What are my flea, tick, and heartworm prevention options?
We offer a variety of prevention options, including chewable tablets, topical treatments, and combination products. During your pet’s visit, we’ll recommend the safest and most effective flea, tick, and heartworm protection based on your pet’s lifestyle.
What should I be feeding my pet?
A balanced, age-appropriate diet is essential. We’re happy to discuss food options during your pet’s visit and help guide you toward a diet that supports their specific health and lifestyle needs. Be cautious of overfeeding and high-calorie treats — obesity is a common issue in pets.
We do not recommend grain-free diets for dogs, as some studies have linked them to heart conditions like dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Your veterinarian can help determine what’s best for your pet.
Should I be brushing my pet’s teeth?
Yes! Daily brushing is ideal, but even a few times a week can help prevent plaque buildup and dental disease. We can recommend pet-safe toothbrushes and toothpastes. During exams, we’ll also assess your pet’s dental health and let you know if a professional cleaning is needed.
